Area 02 - Alaska

Produced and maintained by the Area 02 Website Committee, the purpose of the site is to provide an Internet resource pertaining to the Alaska Area Alcoholics Anonymous.

Welcome to the Route 164 website!

We offer a road, a path, or directions to help people follow the trail blazed by the pioneers of Alcoholics Anonymous. As with many roads and highways, the "route number" identifies the road (or, in this case, the page number of the basic text of Alcoholics Anonymous. "Route 164" offers directions (or suggestions) to help you find your way to the "Road of Happy Destiny."

Page 164 of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous speaks of a path or road: "We realize we know only a little. God will constantly disclose more to you and to us. Ask Him in your morning meditation what you can do each day for the man who is still sick. The answers will come, if your own house is in order. But obviously you cannot transmit something you haven't got. See to it that your relationship with Him is right, and great events will come to pass for you and countless others. This is the Great Fact for us."

"Abandon yourself to God as you understand God. Admit your faults to Him and to your fellows. Clear away the wreckage of your past. Give freely of what you find and join us. We shall be with you in the Fellowship of the Spirit, and you will surely meet some of us as you trudge the Road of Happy Destiny."

For additional help in finding the "right path or route", turn to Chapter 5 - How It Works, page 58: "Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path. Those who do not recover are people who cannot or will not completely give themselves to this simple program, usually men and women who are constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves."

What else associated with the number five has significance? AA's 5th Tradition. In the "long form", it reads "5: Each Alcoholics Anonymous group ought to be a spiritual entity having but one primary purpose-that of carrying its message to the alcoholic who still suffers."

This website is intended to help those who wish to "trudge the road of Happy Destiny", learn "How it Works" and Carry The Message to alcoholics who still suffer.

"I shall use my time."

The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.

Understanding our "relationship" with that higher power we call God - or great spirit or grandfather or...

The Big Book says that our "relationship" with with God as we understand him is crucial. That suggests we ought to understand the meaning of the word "relationship" before we jump to the wrong conclusion.

Some definitions:
1. A particular type of connection existing between people related to or having dealings with each other: has a close relationship with his siblings.
2. Significant connection or similarity between two or more things, or the state of being related to something else.
3. A state of affairs existing between those having relations or dealings .

Discussion vs Crosstalk

I'm a bit confused because I've been faulted for "crosstalking" at an A.A. meeting. To be helpful, I responded to someone's comments; it semed appropriate to make a direct and informative response at a Big Book Study meeting.

Can one discuss something in an A.A. discussion meeting without having it considered inappropriate crosstalk?

I've served on boards of commissioners and boards of directors. Whenever we had a "discussion", a subject was presented and people shared their observations, recommendations, comments, or suggestions, depending on the issue. When one person made a statement, it was proper for another person to respond with a comment, criticism, counterpoint, or words of support.

What is the difference between discussion and crosstalk?

One dictionary says crosstalk is an "incidental, subordinate, or secondary conversation." That suggests either wandering off on a related or unrelated direction or starting a competing side-conversation while the group continues to speak to the main point. As I understand discussion, it should always focus on the subject of the discussion.

Does the definition of "crosstalk" suggest digression into a minor, casual, or subordinate issue? Would an example be shifting the subject to paint when the original subject of discussion was "a black car"? Would another example be if two fellows in the group began a private conversation about a car one of them once owned?

Perhaps someone can clarify why some people believe crosstalk is either a direct response, a contradictory remark, straying off the subject or an inconsiderate, impolite whispering among a few of those attending a meeting.

The philosophy of Viktor Frankl

Life does not owe you happiness, it offers you meaning.

— Dr. Viktor Frankl, a psychiatrist involved in suicide prevention, became a prisoner in Auschwitz and other WWII German concentration camps. His book "Man's Search For Meaning" sowed the seeds of what became "Logotherapy", a forward-looking psychotherapy.

NotGlumAK - A Social Calendar for Alaskan AAs

This is a new area wide [Alaskan] calendar of sober events and activities from groups or individuals.

Let’s get a fellowship going in this town like no other. What do you or your group like to do for fun? If every group were to sponsor one event a month with individuals filling in here and there, we would have all sorts of things going on here.
